Best Violin Case For The Money

When it comes to selecting the perfect violin case, the process can be akin to choosing the right purse or backpack. For those who play the violin long enough, it's likely that you'll accumulate more than one case.

Each type of case serves different purposes and offers distinct advantages and disadvantages. Today, I'll walk you through the three primary types of violin cases you might consider: shaped cases, carbon fiber oblong cases, and wood shell cases.

Shaped Cases

Shaped cases, sometimes called Aero or Dart cases (or in our store, Portland Guardian Case), are known for their compact and lightweight design. They are often made from materials like foam, fiberglass, or carbon composite. These cases are particularly great for travel, especially when flying. Their small size and backpack straps make them almost invisible when carried.

However, shaped cases come with their own set of drawbacks. They typically have limited storage space, with provisions for only two bows and minimal room for accessories like shoulder rests and rosin. To make the most of the available space, you might need to place your shoulder rest upside down under the violin's neck. Additionally, not all shaped cases offer full suspension, which is crucial for protecting your instrument from shocks if the case is dropped. Full suspension cases have small pillows that elevate the violin, preventing its back from touching the case and absorbing impact.

Another limitation is the lack of exterior compartments for sheet music. While some shaped cases, like the Portland Guardian Case, have a small pocket for sheet music, it's often not large enough for bulky books or scores. Furthermore, shaped cases made from materials like fiberglass might not have any exterior storage, requiring you to carry an additional bag for your music.

Carbon Composite Oblong Cases

Carbon composite oblong cases, along with other synthetic material cases (carbon fiber), are popular for their sleek appearance and robust protection. These cases are available in various colors, adding a touch of personal style to your violin transport. The Portland carbon composite oblong case, for example, offers excellent protection and full suspension, ensuring that your violin is well-guarded against impacts.

These cases typically feature provisions for four bows, a hygrometer to monitor humidity, and decent storage space for accessories. However, they may not have as much storage as wood shell cases. One notable downside of many carbon composite oblong cases is the lack of exterior pockets for sheet music. This can be inconvenient, as it necessitates carrying an additional bag for your music.

Despite their strengths, carbon composite oblong cases are bulkier and less travel-friendly compared to shaped cases. Their larger size makes them less convenient for air travel, and they can also be quite expensive. However, if you prioritize protection and style, a carbon composite oblong case is an excellent choice.

Our carbon composite cases actually do come with an exterior pocket for sheet music which is a great addition to the traditional carbon composite cases.

Wood Shell Cases

Wood shell cases, such as the Portland Elite case, are one of the most practical and protective options for your violin. These cases are incredibly durable, often strong enough to support the weight of an adult without buckling. This makes them ideal for situations where your case might be subjected to rough handling or even used as a makeshift seat while waiting for a bus or train.

The primary advantage of wood shell cases is their ample storage space. They typically feature large compartments for shoulder rests, strings, and other accessories, along with provisions for four bows and a string tube to keep your strings straight. Additionally, wood shell cases offer extensive weather protection and are resistant to scuffing, ensuring that they remain in good condition over time.

These cases also come with spacious exterior pockets for sheet music, accommodating larger books and scores with ease. The interior can be customized with different colors, allowing you to choose a design that suits your personal taste. However, wood shell cases are heavier than their synthetic counterparts, which can be a drawback for some musicians.

The other wood shell case we carry at a slightly more affordable price is the Portland Classic Case.

GEWA Space Bag

The GEWA Space Bag is an innovative and versatile option for violinists who need a practical and stylish solution for transporting their instrument. This rucksack-style bag is designed with the modern musician in mind, offering a lightweight and compact design that is perfect for travel, whether you're cycling, flying, or commuting.

The GEWA Space Bag features full suspension with small pillows that prevent the violin from touching the back of the case, providing excellent protection against shocks. It also includes a separate bow holder, allowing you to carry your bow independently if needed. The bag boasts ample storage space, including exterior pockets for sheet music, a compartment for shoulder rests, and additional pockets for accessories like tuners and water bottles.

The bag is equipped with durable YKK zippers, ensuring longevity and reliability. It's a practical, stylish, and cost-effective choice for musicians who need a versatile case for everyday use and travel.

Choosing a violin case based on your needs

Best Violin Cases for Air Travel

When it comes to air travel with your violin, there are several options to protect your instrument. It's important to weigh the differences and choose what best suits your needs.

Shaped cases are ideal for short trips due to their compact, lightweight design, making them easy to carry and fit in small places like overhead bins. However, they offer less protection than other cases, which might leave your violin vulnerable to damage from other bags. (Remember: investing in a more expensive case can be more cost-effective than paying for repairs!).

Carbon composite oblong cases are a great alternative. They offer a balance of style, protection, and lightweight construction, although they are bulkier than shaped cases. These cases provide better protection and are still lighter than wood shell cases, though they may not be as spacious.

Wood shell cases offer the highest level of protection but are heavier and larger. This can make them harder to fit in overhead compartments and more cumbersome to carry around for long distances.

Winner? If you want both lightweight design and protection and can sacrifice some space, the carbon composite case is a great option. For lightweight travel where a quick and small case is needed, shaped cases will work. If you need maximum protection for your violin and space for all your accessories, the wood shell case is probably the best choice for you.

Best Violin Cases For Cycling

For cycling, shaped cases are the best option due to their lightweight and compact design, making them easy to carry on your back without hindering movement. Their small size ensures they remain secure and unobtrusive while riding. Carbon fiber oblong cases can also be considered for their durability and moderate weight, providing strong protection without being overly cumbersome. However, shaped cases are generally preferred for their superior portability and ease of use while cycling.

The GEWA Space Bag also stands out as an excellent choice for cyclists due to its rucksack design and practical features.

Finding the Right Fit

In summary, the best violin case for you depends on your specific needs and preferences. Shaped cases are ideal for lightweight travel, especially by air, but offer limited storage and protection. Carbon composite oblong cases provide a stylish and robust option with moderate storage, though they are bulkier and more expensive. Wood shell cases deliver maximum protection and storage capacity, making them the most practical choice for everyday use, despite their heavier weight. The GEWA Space Bag offers a versatile, affordable, and highly practical alternative for musicians on the go.
