Did You Find the Right Violin Teacher? Three Questions Every Student Should Ask

Finding the right violin teacher can make all the difference — whether you’re learning for the first time, returning after years away, or helping your child start their musical journey.

I always like to begin this conversation with two simple assumptions:

  1. You hired a teacher because you want to get better.

  2. You also want to have fun — because at the end of the day, music should be enjoyable.

So how do you know if you’ve actually found the right teacher?

Here are three important questions you can ask yourself.

1. Does Your Teacher Have Strong Standards?

A great teacher doesn’t just show up — they guide you with clear expectations and solid technical standards.

One of the easiest ways to evaluate this is by looking at how they address technique.

Proper Bow Hold

Do they insist on healthy fundamentals?

  • Are they correcting a straight pinky or locked thumb?

  • Do they actively help you develop a balanced, flexible bow grip?

Good teachers don’t let bad habits slide just because it’s easier in the moment. Proper technique protects you from frustration and injury later on.

Pitch and Intonation

Another major indicator is how they approach pitch.

A strong teacher won’t simply say, “You’re out of tune.” They’ll give you tools to improve:

  • Scales and targeted exercises

  • Finger placement strategies

  • Listening skills that help you self-correct

Correction without guidance isn’t teaching — real teaching builds skills.

Sound Quality

This is one area that sometimes gets overlooked.

Are they helping you develop a better tone? Are they talking about bow weight, contact point, and consistency?

Even beginners should be encouraged to think about sound. After you learn the notes and rhythms, the next step is always improving tone.

2. Are You Actually Progressing?

This might sound obvious, but it’s incredibly important.

Ask yourself:

  • Are you moving forward week by week?

  • Are you learning new skills or concepts?

  • Or are you stuck on the same material for months without clear improvement?

Every student learns differently. A good teacher adapts to your learning style and helps you move forward at a healthy pace.

At the same time, progression isn’t about rushing. If you’re being pushed to new pieces before you feel confident with the previous one, that can be just as problematic.

Real progress means building confidence while continuing to grow.

3. How Do You Feel After Your Lessons?

This might be the most important question of all.

Before a lesson, it’s normal to feel nervous — even professional players feel that way sometimes. But after a lesson, you should feel encouraged.

Do you leave feeling:

  • Motivated to practice?

  • Excited about new ideas or pieces?

  • Optimistic about your progress?

A great teacher challenges you while also helping you feel capable and inspired.

If you consistently leave lessons feeling discouraged or unsure of your direction, it might be time to reevaluate whether that teaching relationship is the right fit.

Final Thoughts from Joel

The right violin teacher should help you grow technically, guide your musical progress, and make you feel excited about the future of your playing.

Strong standards, clear progress, and positive encouragement — when those three things are in place, students tend to thrive.

Whether you’re learning yourself or helping your child learn, remember that the teacher-student relationship plays a huge role in long-term success.

Keep practicing, stay curious, and enjoy the journey.
