The da Salò — Gasparo Bertolotti "da Salò" was one of the earliest violin makers. His surviving instruments are prized for their exceptional tonal qualities. His work influenced later violin makers like Guarneri and Stradivari.

The Maggini — Giovanni Paolo Maggini was another early violin maker. He worked for 20 years under Gasparo "da Salò" and then developed his own models. His larger style of violin is thought to have influenced Stradivari's "Long Model."
